Multiplying and Dividing Fractions

Multiplication 

  1. To multiply proper or improper fractions, first multiply the numerators.
  2. Then multiply the denominators.
  3. The product of the numerators is the numerator of the answer.
  4. The product of the denominators is the denominator of the answer.
  5. If the product is an improper fraction, convert it to a mixed number. 
  6. Reduce the product to lowest terms, if necessary.
  • If one or both of the factors are mixed numbers, first convert them to improper fractions, then multiply.
  • Cancel before multiplying, if possible.
