Multiplying and Dividing Fractions
Multiplication
- To multiply proper or improper fractions, first multiply the numerators.
- Then multiply the denominators.
- The product of the numerators is the numerator of the answer.
- The product of the denominators is the denominator of the answer.
- If the product is an improper fraction, convert it to a mixed number.
- Reduce the product to lowest terms, if necessary.
- If one or both of the factors are mixed numbers, first convert them to improper fractions, then multiply.
- Cancel before multiplying, if possible.
