Welfare and Immigration Reform

Concerns about illegal immigration are still in the headlines today. Welfare is another name for federal assistance for people that need it.

When Bill Clinton ran for President in 1992, he promised that he would “end welfare as we know it.” Americans had wanted welfare reform for many years. By the 1990s, most Americans felt that welfare was a failed social program. Since its earliest years, the United States has always attracted large numbers of immigrants. Yet by the 1970s, many Americans had become concerned with the increasing number of immigrants entering the country illegally.
