The Stock Market Crash of 1929

October 29, 1929 is called “Black Tuesday” in U.S. history. That day the nation experienced one of the worst stock market crashes in history.

Stock prices had already begun to fall in September. This caused many investors to try to sell their stocks. This resulted in stock prices falling even faster. Investors panicked. Many more tried to sell their stocks. By Black Tuesday, stock prices fell more than they had ever fallen. On that single day, the stock market lost $14 million, which was a huge sum at the time. Soon many stocks became worthless. Hundreds of businesses went bankrupt.
