The Impeachment of Andrew Johnson

Congress charged President Andrew Johnson with "high crimes and misdemeanors" in order to impeach him. Read the article to find out why.

When Abraham Lincoln, a Republican, ran for President in 1864, he chose as his running mate Andrew Johnson, a Democrat. Johnson was a Senator from Tennessee who had not supported secession. Lincoln believed that having Johnson on the ticket would persuade Democrats to vote for him. This turned out to be correct.
