The Great Lakes and Prairie Potholes

Glaciers, slowly moving masses of ice, played a big role in forming the Great Lakes and prairie potholes.

What makes the Great Lakes "great"? Lakes Superior, Huron, Michigan, Erie, and Ontario make up one of largest areas of freshwater in the world. The only larger freshwater areas are the polar ice caps. In fact, the area of Lake Superior alone is greater than that of any other freshwater lake. Why do these five lakes cover so much area? Why are they located where they are? For answers to these questions, we have to look to the distant past.
