The Cask of Amontillado
A story by Edgar Allan Poe
Edgar Allan Poe lived in the early 1800s and wrote poetry and short stories. Both his poems and short stories are filled with creepy plots and creepy people. A sense of evil and doom fills his works. Many of his characters meet strange and horrible deaths.
He wrote this short story “The Cask of Amontillado.” A cask is a large wooden barrel that holds wine. Amontillado is a type of sherry wine. The story has been adapted and moved to New Orleans during Mardi Gras. Mardi Gras is the celebration that ends with Ash Wednesday and the beginning of Lent in the Christian calendar.
As you meet the characters, Frankie Fortunato is dressed as a jester. Kings and queens in Europe in the Middle Ages often hired jesters to entertain them. They were a combination of clowns and comic.
