After winning the battle of San Jacinto in 1836, Texas won it's independence from Mexico. But, did you know that Texas didn't become part of the United States right away? It's true. Texas was its own country, called the Republic of Texas until it joined the United States in 1845. Then, 16 years later, it seceded from the Union along with 10 other southern states.
