Settling New France

By the 1700s, New France extended from the Gulf of St. Lawrence south to the Gulf of Mexico. It covered much of what are today Canada and the United States.

In the 1500s, England, France, and Holland sent ships to explore North America. They were looking for a faster water route through the continent to Asia. They called this route the Northwest Passage. No such route existed, of course. But in looking for it, the explorers learned much about North America. As they explored, they claimed land for their countries. One of those explorers was Jacques Cartier from France.
