Moving to the Great Plains

Thousands of people moved to the Great Plains in the 1860s

During the second half of the 1800s, large numbers of settlers moved to the Great Plains. Farmers moved there with the promise of owning land. Ranchers raised cattle on the open range. The environment was hard on both farmers and ranchers. Eventually, both groups succeeded.
